At Baltzar, we are known for offering classic clothes for men with a modern touch. However, with the growing trend of unisex garments and women incorporating menswear to give their outfits a contemporary twist, we wanted to demonstrate how our assortment can also be worn by women through The Girlfriend Edit.
The trend of women wearing classic menswear has evolved from being a fashion statement to a symbol of breaking down gender norms in clothing. This concept is closely tied to the rise of unisex garments and specific styles like the "boyfriend shirt," which blends comfort, versatility, and an effortlessly chic aesthetic.
Historically, menswear has been designed with practicality in mind, emphasizing structure, minimalism, and functionality. When women began incorporating classic menswear into their wardrobes—through tailored suits, crisp button-down shirts, and loafers—it signified not only a rebellion against traditional feminine fashion but also an embrace of freedom and empowerment. By incorporating clothes traditionally reserved for men, women expressed independence, rejecting the limitations imposed by rigid gender roles.
The "boyfriend shirt" is a prime example of this shift. Typically oversized, these shirts evoke a casual, relaxed fit that suggests borrowing from a male partner’s wardrobe. However, the appeal of the boyfriend shirt goes beyond this playful idea. It represents the unisex movement, where the lines between men’s and women’s clothing become increasingly blurred. Unisex garments prioritize comfort, neutral tones, and flexibility over gendered designs, enabling wearers to move beyond social expectations.
Unisex fashion and the borrowing of menswear have led to more fluid and inclusive fashion trends. The once rigid "rules" of what men or women should wear are gradually disappearing, and the influence of menswear on women’s fashion is emblematic of this cultural transformation. Whether it’s a tailored suit, oversized blazer, or casual boyfriend shirt, these garments have allowed women to navigate between the masculine and feminine, creating a new standard that values style, individuality, and comfort over convention.
